My son Gabriel was a life guard for many years, trained to deal with the panic and cryptic fight for survival of drowning victims. Have you ever felt like you were drowning in a sea of confusion, distrust, utter betrayal and wounding?
When the Lord allowed my first husband to be taken from me all I wanted to do was run as far away as I could from the One who had allowed my wounding. Yet I knew He was my only source to rescue me from the tidal wave engulfing my life. I’m quite sure I reflected the typical drowning victim, attacking my rescuer, while clinging to Him in desperation.
I have a friend who is now drowning in her sea of pain. When you get too close, you are sure to be pelted, yet all the while she reaches out for someone to rescue her from her misery. She has not yet reconciled the mystery of her wounding, she blames every bystander for not taming her tsunami and sees every other pain as insignificant compared to hers. She is drowning in her cesspool of pain with the same question any faithful follower of Christ has, “How could you let this happen to me?”
Psalm 18 says, “He sent from on high, He took me; He drew me out of many waters. He delivered me from my strong enemy…He brought me forth also into a broad place; He rescued me, because He delighted in me. Psalm 18:16-19
The Message translation says it this way, “But me he caught--reached all the way from sky to sea; he pulled me out of that ocean of hate.”
And isn’t that the truth. Only God can pull us out of our oceans of anger and bitterness. Only through time does the tidal wave of His undeniable transforming love cause our hearts to cease from striking and flailing, and learn to bend. Only He can man up to the angry beatings that run others off, while kindly drawing us again to His chest in comfort.
When I was trapped in my pain, the Lord kept away many that I thought could be my salvation. As hard as that was to swallow, He did it to draw me into a place in Him I would not have discovered otherwise.
In time I was inspired by His disarming compassion as my heart softened through the breaking. Although we all want to extend a life line to someone caught in the undertow, its only when a drowning victim tires of attacking that they're ready to receive it. The truth is there is only one life guard that is the Master at rescue. The rest of us just fall short, but we can wait patiently upholding our loved one through kindness and prayer and watch the Lord perform an amazing rescue, which He's famous for.
