As we celebrate the birth of Christ this year, and deal with our own unique Griswald family Christmas, it’s a good time for reflection. Before you scream a long phrase of obscenities at uncle Stew who has had too much Christmas Ale and the twins who are fighting over their new baby doll, stop and think about the Godhead’s message.
From the beginning of time the Godhead worked in harmony, as God the Father created the heavens and the earth and the Spirit was “hovering over the surface of the waters (Genesis 1:2). The Son, “the radiance of His glory and the exact representation of His nature” (Hebrews 1:3), joined in speaking the world into existence, saying “Let us make man in Our own image, according to our likeness” (Genesis 1:26).
Now that’s a picture of unity. The three were in one accord.
Later, as Jesus was being baptized the Father pronounced, “This is my Son, in whom I am well pleased” (Matthew 3:17). In time Jesus went on to say, “I have come down from heaven, not to do My own will, but the will of Him, who sent Me” (John 6:38) This whole scene was like watching a tennis match of preference, one to the other.
And because Jesus’ desire is to glorify His Father through the Son, He asks the Father to send the Holy Spirit, because He knows the Holy Spirit will testify about the Son He loves. 1 Corinthians 2:11 says that no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God.
The Father, Son and Spirit are in unity. Though each is distinct, they are one! They serve, love and honor each other in unity. The theme of unity runs throughout the Bible from beginning to end.
This magnificent picture is depicted through Christ and the church the Bride and the Bridegroom. That is why we become one flesh with our spouse in our natural marriages, and in the church, God’s cry is that we would be one like the Godhead is One.
So stop before you throw the pillow at your brother. Remember we were all made in God’s likeness. Sometimes we just demonstrate our distinctiveness very differently or better put a lot differently! All varying aspects of the Griswald family can be seen in our natural families as well as the body of Christ! :)
