Recently two friends were discussing the hugely popular teen movie, Twilight. The movie is about a love relationship between a vampire and a girl. While one friend confessed that she didn’t understand what the buzz was all about, my other friend suggested that the movie captured the innocence and thrill of first love.
As my friends discussed the ins and outs of the book verses the movie, images from the movie flashed before me, while I was gripped with the familiar sense off God’s presence. Suddenly I had a glimpse of why so many people, myself included, connected and even loved the film.
Mankind was created with a need that cannot be satisfied outside of relationship with its Creator. Man hungers for contact with supernatural elements, because relationship between God and man can only be entered into through the supernatural, linked through faith.
The movie Twilight links a supernatural love relationship between a supernatural being and a young girl named Bella. This relationship oozes what we long for, protection from harm, someone who knows our every move, pursues and watches over us, someone willing to fight for us, lay down their own desire, even their very life. This is the familiar story of God who came down to our level even though He was not of this world. In the film we see a supernatural being that chooses to deny himself his own pleasure, fighting to protect and watch over Bella whom he loves.
Within the heated attraction that resonates between Bella and Edward, I was reminded of the passion between the beauty and her beloved in the Bible Book, Song of Solomon. These lovers express their burning passion through these words,
“You have stolen my heart…you have stolen my heart with one glance of your eyes…(4:9) Place me like a seal over your heart, like a seal on your arm; for love is as strong as death, its jealousy unyielding as the grave. It burns like blazing fire, like a mighty flame.”(8:6)
Is it not in this twilight of time, as deep calls to deep, the very yearning of God for His bride, mankind is being stirred and awakened to the greatest love we’ve ever known? Are we not longing for a flawless love that exceeds the realms and limits of this world, a love transcending any human kind, existing for all eternity? The movie Twilight, speaks to this very longing in the heart of man.
Love is being awakened!
