Desires of the Heart

We all know the well quoted verse from the Bible, “Delight yourself also in the Lord, and He will give you the desires of your heart,” (Psalm 37:4) but did you know that this actually means He will appoint, assign and designate the secret petitions of your heart. Yet how many Christians do you know agonize over what they truly want in their heart, questioning whether or not their desires are from God?

This struggle seems especially related to occupation. We often second guess the way God has wired us each with our own natural bent and think we have to be wired for ministry or something that “looks” Godly.

I use to constantly second guess my desires until I put this verse together with verse 3 before it that say, ”Trust (lean on, rely on, and be confident) in the Lord and do good; so shall you dwell in the land and feed surely on His faithfulness, and truly you shall be fed.” It’s interesting that when we truly are connected to our God given hearts desires the Lord will continue to feed and cause those passions to bloom.

In verse 5 it says, “Commit your way to the Lord, which actually means to roll each care we have onto Him, like a rolled up blanket; trust, lean on, rely on, and be confident in Him and He will bring it to pass.

The best part follows in verse 6, "And He will make your uprightness and right standing with God go forth as the light, and your justice and right as [the shining sun of] the noonday." As we trust in Him He will make the place of faith and right standing shine forth as light from our lives

The really cool part about his verse is that noonday comes from the root word rhc, to press out oil, and to glisten. When we trust and lean on Him, He is able to tweak any motives or desires that start to go astray. We all know what the oil press feels like. And through that connectedness with the Lord the oil of the spirit is poured out from our lives, glistening like the brightness of day.
