A friend of mine who has been a musician and worship leader for many years was telling me about the auditions he attended for a worship team. Although he is a singer and guitarist he decided simply to audition for base.
As it came time to get his equipment together the only base amp he could come up with was a tiny practice amp. And wouldn't you know it, when he arrived at the tryouts everyone else had their full size amps and there he stood with his little micro version of the real deal.
As he told the story I couldn’t help be reminded that sometimes we step out in what we are gifted to do, yet feel like the faithless spies surveying the Promised Land who surmised that they were ineffective grasshoppers.
The promise of my friend’s opportunity to participate in what he loves to do suddenly became a massive giant, while the enemy was hoping he would run home and hide. The unfaithful spies did run home in fear, however it was Caleb who said, “We will take this mountain.”
When the voices around us seem to be amplified a thousand times louder than our own and we feel ill equipped, we need to put on the macro faith that Caleb possessed. No matter what giants stand before us we need to face them head on like my friend did, because with God we can take the land.
