As a girl I loved to line my dolls up on my bed for “fireside chats” where I would teach them about the world we live in. I prepared them for the day they might follow suit with Pinocchio and break free! Life hasn’t really changed that much, only now I share my life lessons with real living dolls that make up the beautiful woman after God’s own heart, His Bride.
In the same way I trained my dolls to overcome their situation in life; I have dug, scraped and battled my way out of my boxes of oppression that have threatened to keep me lifeless. Now it only seems natural that I help others stack the ammunition for their own arsenal of defense in their battles against the enemy, who is hell bent on stealing our destinies and keeping us imprisoned in a lifeless form.
Recently I was sharing with a client about a tremendous act of defiance in overcoming the enemy I once heard on Oprah. When Uma Thurman was being interviewed a fan gave her impassioned thanks for being a virtual life coach of sorts, in helping her survive the onslaught of cancer through the bold character she portrayed in the movie Kill Bill.
After seeing the 2003 Quentin Tarantino movie, Kill Bill the cancer victim assigned her plaguing illness the characteristics of the antagonist Bill, from the film. In identifying the evil of her enemy she chose to fight back with the tenacity of Uma’s character called the Bride. Somewhat fitting I would say!
The Bride was a member of a deadly Viper Assassination gang until, she found out that she was pregnant and carrying life inside her own. With that realization she decided to flea from the gang to marry and gain a new identity.
Bill, her boss and gang leader relentlessly pursued his defector, brutally killing everyone at the wedding and striking what he thought would be the last blow to the Bride, by putting a bullet in her head. After four years of being in a coma, the Bride awakened to realize her enemy would not relent in his pursuit to destroy her. Arming herself with a sword and all of her skill in battle, so strategically took up the fight. I am not recommending this graphically disturbing movie; however it does present a powerful picture for us of the battle over God’s glorious Bride, if we can get past the messenger.
Although our battle is not with flesh and blood, we do have a spiritual enemy. And surely this is no time to be powerless. As the glorious Bride we have divine spiritual weapons at our disposal and the powerful sword of the Spirit to wield. We must take responsibility to awaken from our own spiritual coma and steward the life we’ve been given. There is great fruit that will emerge as a result of contending for the voice, life and pulsing heart inside each of us that often gets snuffed out when we are careless and ignorant of the battle raging around us.
The illustration I shared about my dolls is a reminder that the only way we can make it in times like these is to possess the strength of a childlike heart. A childlike heart of faith is the greatest weapon of defense in our arsenal. It was with child like creativity and tenacity that the valiant cancer survivor took her stance against her enemy. It was with that same tenacity and childlike faith that David faced Goliath, while the grown ups cowered in fear. It is time to arm ourselves spiritually, move out in childlike-bold faith with the knowledge of who we are in Christ. Its time to shine like all Brides’ do!
