While Vivian secretly tucked herself away in the bathroom to floss her teeth in the movie, Pretty Women, Edward huffily followed assuming she was using drugs. Upon finding her flossing her teeth he commented that people rarely surprised him. With a sense of wide-eyed wonder Vivian retorted, “You’re lucky, people surprise the heck out of me!”
What still surprises you amidst your day? Are you able to see the world as an adventure waiting for your engagement, as a child embarking on a new experience?
Springtime summons childlike curiosity, as kids count down for hide-and-seek, assemble clover-chain-necklaces, and dart about fully engaged in the moment. Child’s play is embraced on the spot. It's never postponed for the future.
The challenge for adults is to recapture that childlike innocence that existed before the clutter and preoccupation of adulthood. Look around at your world, the people, and surroundings, and try out your curiosity once again. Look through the eyes of a child. What can you see as if for the first time that calls to be experienced in the moment? Recapture being fully engaged in the present.
